Miri Primary School
The school teaches children from the age of 4 years to 14 years. Our School
is located in a rural set up in Nyeri district in the Central part of Kenya
. We are located about 2 hours drive from the capital city of Kenya , Nairobi
. The school was established in the sixties and has produced dynamic people
in the community.
We are also in the process of connecting power in the school in order
to facilitate use of computers and connection of the phone to open
up communication with
the outside world. We as the old students have paid for the connection and
wiring in the school. This was a major project for the first quarter of 2007.
Our major aim is to bring together the old students and the community
to contribute in the development of the school. We do organise education
and
career days
for the students in order to motivate them to perform. We also organise
prize giving days to reward exemplary performance while motivating
the students.
We have organised a marathon in order to raise awareness in the surrounding
areas and also raise funds for other activities like tree planting and
teacher motivation. This will be held on 10th August 2007 and the
guest of honour
will be Catherine Ndereba, a world renowned marathon runner with many
accolades who also hails from the region. The theme of the inaugural
marathon is "Community
partnerships for progress in Education, Environment and HIV awareness".
As a result of the cooperation, the performance has greatly improved over
the past three years. From being among the last schools in the division,we
managed
to be ranked position 7 out of 72 public schools in the region in year 2006.
Our success has really inspired other schools in the region who have also
started similar organisations and are also organising prize giving days.
Therefore
our initiative has impacted directly on the surrounding community and has
assisted raise the standards of education in the area.We have truly made
a difference
and managed to build a progressive generation, together as is our motto.
Our vision is to be ranked among the top 10 best performing schools in the
district
which has about 400 schools. The current student enrollment is around 460.
We are therefore seeking partnerships with like minded instituitions in order to expose our teachers and students alike to global trends in education and development . We would also want to design a curriculum based course with a major bias on environmental conservation and environmentally friendly and sustainable farming methods as we are based in an agriculturally productive area. We would also want to integrate health related content in the curriculum with a bias on HIV/AIDS which is wrecking havoc in the region. Community development programs could also come in handy for the commmunity around the school.
